North Korea fires missile

  • Fired shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday from a known test site in North Pyongan province, not far from the border with China.
  • Flew over the Korean peninsula and into the Sea of Japan, South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said.
  •  North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared on Jan. 1 that the regime was in its “final stage” of test-firing its first an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
  • It is not yet known whether the missile was an ICBM.
