Chief Justice knocks fool in White House
AP
— Chief Justice John Roberts is pushing back against President Donald Trump for his description of a judge who ruled against Trump’s migrant asylum policy as an “Obama judge.”
— It’s the first time the Republican-appointed leader of the federal judiciary has offered even a hint of criticism of Trump, who has previously blasted federal judges who ruled against him.
— Roberts said Wednesday the U.S. doesn’t have “Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges.” He commented in a statement released by the Supreme Court after a query by The Associated Press.

Here’s how N.J. is likely to legalize marijuana
under new bill just unveiled by top Democrats

NJ.com
— After months of private negotiations, Democratic leaders of the state Legislature on Wednesday released the most recent version of a blueprint to create a multi-billion-dollar legal marijuana industry in New Jersey and allow low-level criminal arrests and convictions to be expunged.
— Hearings are scheduled Monday morning at the Statehouse in Trenton for the 147-page “New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory and Expungement Aid Modernization Act.”
— Broadly, the bill would legalize the possession and personal use of one ounce or less of marijuana for people at least 21 years old, and create, regulate and impose a 12 percent tax on a commercial marijuana industry in the state. An extra 2 percent excise tax would be raised for towns which host cannabis businesses.
^ NJ is a crossroads. Hard to see how NJ does this without bringing NY, CT and PA with it. Tax revenue losses would be just too great for these surrounding states. This may spell the end of the Pot Prohibition.

— Reaction: “If he won’t resign, those who have the power to remove him from those posts should do so at once. It is also important to note that along with being disturbed, Johnson is a coward. Shortly after people began posting negative comments about his disgusting comments … Johnson removed the post from his Facebook page. Unfortunately for him, screenshots of his vile post went viral. He won’t be able to escape responsibility for what he said.”

Venezuela treasurer took $1 billion in bribes
Reuters
— Venezuela’s former national treasurer admitted receiving over $1 billion in bribes as part of illicit foreign currency operations that involved a local television mogul now indicted in U.S. courts, according to U.S. court documents unsealed on Tuesday.
— Alejandro Andrade, who ran the treasury for four years under late socialist leader Hugo Chavez, received properties, platinum and gold Rolex watches and Mercedes Benz vehicles thanks to the scheme, the documents from the Southern District of Florida say.
— He did so with the help of conspirators including Raul Gorrin, owner of television station Globovision, who has been charged with paying bribes to Andrade and others as well as helping to launder the payments, according to documents unsealed this week.

Nearly 50 years later, DNA helps identify a killer
CBS News
— A convicted rapist who died in 2001 has been identified as the killer of a 23-year-old Harvard University graduate student nearly 50 years ago, a Massachusetts prosecutor said Tuesday. DNA evidence points to Michael Sumpter as the man who killed Jane Britton, who was sexually assaulted and bludgeoned to death in her Cambridge apartment in January 1969, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.
— Britton’s slaying is the third killing that Sumpter has been linked to since his death at age 54.
– Investigators have said he is also responsible for the slayings of two other women in the Boston area in the 1970s. He died of cancer shortly after being paroled from a 15- to 20-year sentence for raping a woman in her Boston apartment in 1975, Ryan’s office said.

Lansing Journal
msu prez— Former MSU President Lou Anna Simon has been charged with lying to police, making her the third person charged by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office in its investigation of the university related to mega pervert Larry Nassar.
— Simon was charged today in Eaton County District Court with two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts.
— Simon talked to Michigan State Police in May. Court documents say she made false or misleading statements “that she was not aware of the nature of the complaint that” prompted a 2014 Title IX investigation.
— Additionally, “when asked about whether she was aware of any investigation involving Larry Nassar prior to 2016 she falsely or misleadingly said that ‘I was aware that in 2014 there was a sports medicine doc who was subject to a review’ when in fact she knew it was Larry Nassar who was the subject of the 2014 MSU Title IX investigation,” according to court records.

Judge rejects Mississippi “15-week” abortion ban
Reuters
…
The judge acknowledged feeling “frustration” that Mississippi lawmakers passed the statute even though similar bans in other states have also been thrown out by federal courts.
— “The real reason we are here is simple. The state chose to pass a law it knew was unconstitutional to endorse a decades-long campaign, fueled by national interest groups, to ask the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.”
